Shai Hulud at Rocketown on 2010-07-03
There is not much I can say about legendary hardcore band Shai Hulud that hasn’t already been said in their storied 15 year career. Their influence into genres such as hardcore, post hardcore, screamo/emocore, progressive hardcore, and metal is immeasurable and their influence on South Florida’s hardcore and metal scene is indelible. Without them, the scene may not be where it is today down here and I certainly owe them my own debt of gratitude. Although Matt Fox — and to an extent, Matt Fletcher — is the only original member of the band, you would not know it by their stage show. Despite none of the band members living in the same town (or state), their stage presence is tight, fluid, and extremely cohesive; it’s as if they all started the band 15 years ago and never stopped playing since then. I think a lot of that is owed solely to both the music’s meaning and their strong roots in the hardcore scene. Honestly, there isn’t much I can say about this band of genuinely awesome guys that hasn’t been said over and over. They’re all insanely down to earth and very appreciative of the people in the scene that still remember them.
I have to really hand it to Rocketown for getting them down here, I have no idea how they did it and I don’t really care. This is a set I will not forget for a very long time.
